LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After this card you can explain what Primary Color Correction is for and in what order to approach it, and complete a full first-pass correction on a shot from assessment to final look.

Concepts

Primary Color Correction is the global adjustment of color and contrast across the entire frame — no local fixes, no singling out objects. The goal is to make footage "correct" first, and only then make it pretty.

  • Correct first, create later: pass one fixes technical issues — exposure, contrast, white balance (Correction); the stylish "look" (Grading) comes after.
  • Tools split the work: wheels handle per-zone brightness and casts (see Primary Color Wheels), curves handle fine contrast (see Custom Curves), temperature handles overall warmth — all inside the Primary Corrector on the left.
  • Eyes plus scopes: eyes get tired and displays lie — let scopes testify about exposure and casts (see Video Scopes), and save your taste for the final call.
  • Consistency is the hard metric: shots in one scene must look filmed at the same time and place — primary grading unifies unruly footage into one scene.
  • One adjustment per node: the first pass happens on node 01; contrast, tint and friends each get their own new node (see Understanding Nodes).

Steps

  1. On the Color page, select a shot and click Scopes to open the Parade — assess first: where do traces bunch up, are channels levelAssessing footage with the Parade
  2. Set black and white points with the Lift and Gain Master Wheels: trace bottoms touch 0, tops approach 1023 (see Primary Color Wheels)Setting black and white points
  3. Wherever a cast sits, nudge that zone's wheel toward the complementary color while leveling the Parade channel tops and bottoms
  4. Use Gamma to set midtone brightness and warmth — the "feel" of skin and subject gets decided here
  5. Press Shift-D (or click Bypass) to compare; when happy, press Option-S/Alt-S for a new node and move on to contrast or tint

Practice练习

  1. Take a flat-looking clip and walk through "assess → black/white points → de-cast → midtones", writing one sentence about what you did at each step.
  2. Take two shots from the same scene and grade the second to feel like "the same scene" as the first — verify by toggling Shift-D on both.

What's the difference between primary and secondary correction?

Primary adjusts the whole frame (exposure, contrast, white balance); secondary targets a specific area or color in the frame (Lesson 5's qualifiers and Power Windows). The order is always primary first.

Do I have to grade every shot from scratch?

Same thinking, not the same starting point. Once one shot in a scene is graded, you can reuse its node tree and fine-tune — the goal is a consistent set (see Shot Matching).

Does phone or consumer-camera footage need primary correction too?

Yes. If the image looks flat, tinted or badly exposed, it deserves a pass; phone footage usually needs only a light touch, while log footage must be normalized first (see Color Management).

Should I edit first or grade first?

In real projects, fine grading usually waits for picture lock so you don't grade shots that get cut. In this course you jump straight into the Color page — order doesn't affect your learning here.
