Lift / Gamma / Gain

Lift = 暗部(定黑场)· Gamma = 中间调(定氛围)· Gain = 亮部(定白场)。顺序:先 Lift/Gain 定黑白,再 Gamma 调感觉。

Parade

After this card you can say which brightness range each of the Lift, Gamma and Gain wheels controls, and use a wheel together with its Master Wheel to fix exposure and color casts.

Concepts

The Lift, Gamma and Gain wheels are the heart of primary grading, each owning one brightness range — they live in the Primary Corrector on the left of the Color page, and every wheel has a Master Wheel beneath it for brightness.

  • Lift drives the shadows: dark areas, hair, night scenes; its Master Wheel sets the black point.
  • Gamma drives the midtones: skin and most of your subject live here; it shapes the mood without touching the points you already set.
  • Gain drives the highlights: skies, lamps, bright edges; its Master Wheel sets the white point.
  • The ranges overlap on purpose: moving Lift nudges the midtones too, which keeps transitions smooth — the price is that the wheels work as a team, so expect to go back and forth.
  • Kill casts with complementary colors: whatever tint you see, nudge toward the color opposite it on the wheel — blue cast toward yellow, red toward cyan, green toward magenta; a few pixels is already visible.

A reliable routine: set the black and white points with Lift and Gain first, then shape the mood with Gamma — it leaves your points untouched; Offset shifts everything at once and can wait.

The pair below shows a typical black/white-point plus de-cast correction (drag the slider):

Before grading
After grading
Which range does each wheel drive?

Lift = shadows (sets the black point) · Gamma = midtones (sets the mood) · Gain = highlights (sets the white point). Order: black & white first (Lift/Gain), then feel (Gamma).

Drag the three sliders below and feel which range each wheel owns:

Steps

  1. On the Edit page, select the clip you want to grade and click Color in the bottom navigation barEntering the Color page
  2. Click the shot in the timeline (orange outline = selected), open Scopes from the lower-right toolbar and switch to Parade
  3. Drag Gain's Master Wheel to the right until the Parade trace tops approach 1023 without crossing — crossing means clipped highlightsSetting the white point with the Master Wheel
  4. Drag Lift's Master Wheel to the left until the trace bottoms touch 0 — black point set, contrast snaps in
  5. Still seeing a cast? Nudge the matching region's wheel toward the complementary color while watching the Parade channel tops line up
  6. Finish with Gamma to set midtone brightness and warmth — your black and white points stay put
  7. Click Bypass at the viewer's upper right (or press Shift-D) to compare before and after, then toggle it back

Practice练习

  1. Take a flat, low-contrast clip and, using only the Lift and Gain Master Wheels, park the black and white points near 0 and 1023, then compare with Bypass.
  2. Take a clip with an obvious cast: guess the complementary direction before touching the wheel, then verify — and after each move, watch what happened to the other two brightness ranges.

How do the three wheels split the work, and which do I touch first?

Lift and Gain first to set the black and white points (technical correction), then Gamma for the midtone mood (creative work). Lift = shadows, Gain = highlights, Gamma = midtones; leave Offset alone for now.

I moved Lift — why did the midtones change too?

That's by design. The three ranges overlap so transitions stay smooth; the trade-off is that every wheel pulls on its neighbors — after adjusting Lift, check whether Gamma needs a small compensating move.

The image looks yellow/blue — how do I know which way to drag?

Use complementary colors: drag toward the color opposite the cast — yellow cast toward blue, blue toward yellow, red toward cyan, green toward magenta. If unsure, open Parade and level the channel tops (or bottoms).

I dragged too far — how do I get back to default?

Every region has a Reset button in its upper-right corner, and double-clicking a parameter label resets that value. Grading is non-destructive, so experiment freely.
