LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After this card you can read what the Custom Curves axes mean, and use the black/white end points plus an S-curve to control a shot's contrast with precision.

Concepts

Custom Curves is an input-to-output mapping graph: you place points to change the brightness of specific tonal ranges — the X axis is the original image tonality (black on the left, white on the right), the Y axis is the result (darker below, brighter above). It lives in the Curves palette of the Color page's center panel.

  • The diagonal means "no change": the default line from the lower-left black point to the upper-right white point is "input equals output"; push a region up and it brightens, pull it down and it darkens.
  • End points own the poles: drag the lower-left point right to crush blacks, the upper-right point left to brighten whites — the same job as the Lift and Gain Master Wheels.
  • Points fence off ranges: a point's influence stops at its neighbors; drop "anchor" points over regions you want untouched so adjustments don't spill over.
  • Right-click deletes: click the curve to add a point, right-click a point to remove it; the YRGB histogram behind the curve shows where the pixels actually pile up.
  • S-curve = contrast: pull the shadows point down, push the highlights point up, and you have the classic S-curve — far more flexible than the Contrast slider.

Steps

  1. On the Color page, select the clip, click the curves icon on the center panel toolbar to open the Curves palette, and make sure you're in Custom modeOpening the Curves palette
  2. Drag the black-point control in the lower left to the right to deepen the shadows — watch the Parade trace bottom approach 0Dragging the black point down
  3. Drag the white-point control in the upper right to the left to lift the highlights — the trace tops approach 1023 without crossing
  4. Click the curve about a quarter of the way up to add a shadows point, then nudge it downward
  5. Add another point about a third of the way down from the top and lift it gently — the S takes shape and contrast snaps inThe S-curve taking shape
  6. Press Shift-D to compare before and after; right-click any point you're unhappy with to delete it

Practice练习

  1. Take a flat, washed-out clip and stretch the black and white points using only the two end points, then compare with Shift-D.
  2. On the same clip, add contrast first with the Contrast slider, then with an S-curve — toggle between them and feel the difference in control.

Wheels or curves — which do I reach for first?

Use the wheels for black/white points and overall mood (see Primary Color Wheels); switch to curves when you need to isolate a narrow tonal range or sculpt the exact shape of contrast. Wheels own three broad zones; curves subdivide inside a zone.

I added too many points and the curve is a rollercoaster — now what?

Right-click the points to delete them one by one, or hit Reset in the palette's upper-right corner and start over. A wavy curve usually means banding — fewer points win.

Can I brighten just the midtones without touching the black and white points?

Yes. Drop one anchor point in the shadows and one in the highlights to pin both ends, then add a point in the middle and raise it — the poles stay put.
