LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After this card you can explain what trimming is, where handles come from, and drag clip edges in Selection mode to adjust In and Out points precisely.

Concepts

Trimming means adjusting a clip's In and Out points after it is already on the timeline — the rough cut settles "is the order right"; trimming settles "where exactly does each cut land". It is called the editor's most important skill.

  • Only the boundary moves: trimming never slices a clip or creates new ones — it just makes an existing clip longer or shorter.
  • Handles set the limit: the unused footage at a clip's head and tail is its handles, shown as a white outline while you drag — once they run out, the clip can't stretch any further.
  • Two modes, two jobs: Selection mode (A) drags edges to change duration and is the intuitive start; Trim Edit mode (T) unlocks ripple, roll, slip, and slide (see Trim Edit Mode).
  • Trim several points at once: Cmd/Ctrl-click to add more edit points and drag them together; keyboard nudges are more precise than the mouse.

Steps

  1. Make sure the timeline is in Selection mode (press A; the arrow button in the toolbar stays highlighted)
  2. Hover over a clip's left or right edge until the pointer becomes a trim iconTrim cursor on a clip edge with the white handle outline
  3. Hold and drag the edge: outward to lengthen the clip, inward to shorten it
  4. Watch the frame offset in the tooltip (e.g. +00:20) and release on the mark
  5. Move the playhead back before the edit and play through to check the join

Practice练习

  1. Drag any clip's Out point about a second shorter, then drag it back, watching the white handle outline.
  2. Nudge a clip to the right to open a gap, then drag the next clip's left edge outward to fill it.

Is trimming the same as cutting with Blade?

No. Trimming only moves an existing clip's In or Out point and creates nothing new; Blade slices one clip into two. For finessing, trim first.

Why won't the clip stretch when I drag outward?

That side's handle is used up — the camera simply stopped recording there. The end of the white outline is the end of the footage, so it won't budge.

What's the difference between dragging a clip and dragging its edge?

Dragging the clip moves it and leaves a gap behind; dragging an edge changes its duration. To make later clips follow automatically, use a ripple trim (see Ripple Trim).
