LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After this card you can explain why source quality sets the ceiling for qualifier selections, and make the right trade-offs when a selection won't come clean.

Concepts

The precision ceiling of a qualifier selection is set by the footage's color information — the tool is only half the story; the other half was decided the moment the clip was shot and encoded.

  • Heavy compression, thin information: highly compressed codecs like H.264 discard much of the color data, leaving the qualifier with little to work with — selections turn patchy.
  • Higher bit depth selects better: 10-bit footage has far finer color transitions than 8-bit, so selection edges come out smoother.
  • RAW keeps the most: formats like Blackmagic RAW preserve the most original color data — the best raw material for refined selections.
  • Noise and banding are enemies: high-ISO noise and compression blocks read as "another color" to the qualifier and pollute the selection.

Steps

  1. Select the clip in the Media Pool, open the File tab of the Inspector, and check its codec and bit depthChecking codec and bit depth
  2. Drag over the target color with the 3D Qualifier, then press Shift-H for Highlight to judge the matte
  3. If the matte is patchy, first rescue it with Matte Finesse (see Matte Finesse)A patchy matte on heavily compressed footage
  4. Still dirty? Add a Power Window around the target to shrink the qualifier's working area
  5. If a higher-bitrate version of the shot exists, select again on it and compare

Practice练习

  1. Find a heavily compressed clip and a high-bitrate clip of the same kind of scene, run the identical qualifier selection on both, and compare matte cleanliness.
  2. On compressed footage, finish the same selection once with the qualifier alone and once with qualifier plus window — compare time spent and results.

Same steps, so why won't my footage select cleanly?

Most likely the footage is too compressed and short on color information — phone-shot H.264 is the classic case. Work with a window; don't wrestle the qualifier.

What format is best for secondary grading?

10-bit or higher, low compression, or RAW (like Blackmagic RAW) carries the most information. 8-bit highly compressed footage has a low selection ceiling — decide in production, not in post.

My footage is already badly compressed — any hope?

There's rescue, not reversal. Matte Finesse for noise, a Power Window to limit the area, and lowered precision expectations are the realistic combo.
