LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After this card you can name the classic memory colors, explain why they tolerate the least drift, and use scopes to keep skies, foliage and skin inside a natural range.

Concepts

Memory colors are the everyday colors your audience carries in their heads — skies should read blue, grass green, skin alive; everyone owns an inner reference, and a small drift feels "off".

  • Three sensitive categories: skies, foliage (grass and leaves), and skin tones — viewers hold the firmest memories of these, so mistakes show fastest.
  • Small drift, big exit: a magenta sky, yellowing grass, a green-tinged face — viewers can't say what's wrong, they just stop believing the image.
  • No memory, no rules: clothing, walls and car paint have no shared reference — that's your safest playground for stylization.
  • Scopes give an objective anchor: the Vectorscope's Skin Tone Indicator marks the hue skin should sit on, and it's more reliable than your eyes.

Steps

  1. On the Color page, pick a shot with people, sky or foliage and open the Scopes
  2. Switch to the Vectorscope and make sure the Skin Tone Indicator is enabledThe Vectorscope with its skin tone line
  3. Check how far the skin trace sits from the indicator line; if it drifts, nudge the Gamma wheel toward the lineSkin trace hugging the indicator line
  4. Go back to the image itself: skies shouldn't lean magenta, foliage shouldn't go yellow — beyond scopes, your own memory is an instrument too
  5. Press Shift-D to compare before and after, confirming the shot looks "more natural", not just "more blue and green"

Practice练习

  1. Take an outdoor portrait clip, push the skin onto the indicator line, then deliberately push it off — feel where "off" begins.
  2. Grade two versions of the same sky, one natural blue and one magenta-leaning; export a frame of each and note which one you can live with.

Does the sky have to be one "correct blue"?

There's no single value. A memory color is a range the audience accepts, not a fixed swatch — a pink-purple sunrise sky works fine, because viewers know sunrise skies aren't blue.

Does the skin tone line work for all skin tones?

Yes. Skin tones differ mainly in brightness; their hues all cluster around the indicator line — which is exactly why it's useful.

Will a stylized grade clash with memory colors?

Drift is allowed when it's controlled. Tolerance depends on having a reason: skin staying plausible inside a unified teal-and-orange look is style; a face going green on its own is an accident.
