LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Learning Objectives

After this card you can control playback loudness with the Main Monitor Volume, and tell apart "how loud you hear it" from "how loud the file really is".

Concepts

The Main Monitor Volume is the speaker control at the top right of the timeline, and it only governs how loud your monitoring sounds — it touches no level in the timeline and nothing in the rendered file.

  • Monitoring only: turning it changes what you hear in headphones or speakers; clip, track, and bus levels stay exactly as they are.
  • Mute in one click: click the speaker icon to silence playback instantly; click again to restore.
  • Dim ducks temporarily: toggle Dim to drop the monitoring level so you can talk to someone; toggle again to pop back.
  • Exports ignore it: the rendered file's loudness is set by track and bus levels — no matter how low you monitor, the deliverable is unaffected.

Steps

  1. Find the speaker icon and volume slider at the top right of the timelineThe Main Monitor Volume control at the top right
  2. Drag the slider to set monitoring loudness; click the speaker icon to mute
  3. Toggle Dim when you need a temporary drop, and toggle it again to restore

Practice练习

  1. During playback, sweep the monitor volume from minimum to maximum while watching the Mixer meters — verify they don't move at all.
  2. Try Mute and Dim back to back, and explain the difference: one silences, the other only lowers.

I turned the monitor down — will my exported video be quieter?

No. The Main Monitor Volume only affects what you hear; render levels are decided by clip, track, and bus levels. The two are completely independent.

So where do I read the real levels of my piece?

On the Mixer meters for each track and Bus 1 — those are the levels written into the file (see Advanced Audio Mixing).

The lab headphones are too quiet — can I push the track faders to compensate?

Don't. If monitoring is quiet, turn up the Main Monitor Volume first, then check the system volume; pushing track faders only messes up the real levels of your piece.
