LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  2. High Range

已经有 Lift/Gamma/Gain 了,为什么还要 Log 轮?

After this card you can explain how the Log Wheels differ from the primary wheels, switch the palette to Log mode, and use Shadow/Midtone/Highlight for narrow-range zone refinements.

Concepts

The Log Wheels are the Primary Corrector's second mode, splitting the image into three narrower brightness zones — Shadow, Midtone and Highlight — unlike the broadly overlapping Lift/Gamma/Gain ranges, these zones stay focused: moving one barely disturbs its neighbors.

  • Four wheels, clear jobs: Shadow drives the deep darks, Midtone the middle, Highlight the bright end, plus Offset to shift everything; each wheel has a Master Wheel beneath it for brightness.
  • Narrow ranges, little overlap: the zones have firm boundaries, ideal for precise work like "darken the sky without touching the face" — the trade-off is losing the natural transitions that wide overlap gives you, so grade with a lighter hand.
  • Movable boundaries: the High Range and Low Range sliders shift the zone borders, and Pivot moves the center of the midtones — you decide how wide each zone is.
  • Later in the pipeline: within one node, the image passes through Lift/Gamma/Gain before the Log wheels — the classic routine is balancing with the primary wheels, then refining with Log.
  • Typical battleground: zone refinement on log-encoded and high-dynamic-range footage, sculpting cinematic contrast — and it works just as well on ordinary SDR material.

Steps

  1. On the Color page, select a shot and open the mode menu at the palette's upper left (default Primaries - Wheels)Opening the wheels mode menu
  2. Choose Log - Wheels — the panel swaps to the Shadow / Midtone / Highlight / Offset wheels
  3. To refine highlights: drag Highlight's Master Wheel to darken or lift only the bright zone, and watch the shadows stay putRefining highlights with the Highlight wheel
  4. For a highlight cast, nudge the Highlight wheel toward the complementary color; fix shadows the same way on the Shadow wheel
  5. Zones too wide or too narrow? Drag High Range / Low Range to redraw the borders, and Pivot to recenter the midtones
  6. Press Shift-D to compare; undo an unwanted move with that zone's Reset in the upper right

Practice练习

  1. Take a shot with an over-bright sky but well-exposed people; darken the sky using only Log mode's Highlight wheel, and confirm the faces barely move.
  2. Drag High Range to change the highlight zone, then redo the previous task — feel what "movable boundaries" means.

I already have Lift/Gamma/Gain — why Log wheels on top?

The three wheels overlap broadly on purpose: smooth transitions, but every move pulls on the neighbors. Log zones are narrow and self-contained, built for refinement. Balance with the wheels first, refine with Log (see Primary Color Wheels).

Are Log wheels only for log footage?

No — they work on any footage. The name comes from the log-like way they divide brightness; log/HDR material has more dynamic range and benefits most, but plain SDR clips work too.

What do High Range and Low Range do?

They move the zone borders: High Range sets where midtones meet highlights, Low Range where shadows meet midtones, and Pivot recenters the midtones. The defaults are fine — touch them when you need finer zoning.

If I adjust in Log mode and switch back to Primaries, do I lose it?

No. Both modes keep their adjustments and both stay active — within a node, the primary wheels are computed before the Log wheels. Just remember which side you touched.
