LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • 六区分两组:面板一次显示三个轮,点顶部圆形图标在暗部组(Black/Dark/Shadow)和亮部组(Light/Highlight/Specular)之间切换。

Light/Highlight/Specular

After this card you can say which brightness range each of the six HDR Wheels zones controls, and use each zone's Highlight preview button plus its dedicated Saturation/Exposure sliders for precise zone grading.

Concepts

The HDR Wheels split the brightness range into six zones — Black, Dark, Shadow, Light, Highlight and Specular — far finer than the three Lift/Gamma/Gain zones. They were built for high-dynamic-range footage, and they work just as well on ordinary SDR clips.

  • Six zones in two banks: the panel shows three wheels at a time; click the circular icons along the top to switch between the dark bank (Black/Dark/Shadow) and the bright bank (Light/Highlight/Specular).
  • The Global wheel stays put: the leftmost Global wheel is always visible and behaves like Offset, shifting the whole frame; if you'd rather use its slot for another zone, change it in the panel options.
  • Per-zone saturation and exposure: every zone carries its own Saturation and Exposure sliders — saturate or darken one brightness range only, something the standard wheels can't do without secondary tools.
  • The Highlight button previews territory: press and hold a zone's Highlight button and every area it does NOT affect turns gray in the viewer — you see exactly what the wheel owns.
  • Soft transitions, adjustable widths: the six zones roll off into each other like the standard wheels, but each zone's coverage can be adjusted — you choose the precision.

Steps

  1. On the Color page, select a shot and click the HDR Wheels icon at the top of the left grading panelSwitching to the HDR Wheels panel
  2. Click the circular icons along the top to show the bank you need: dark (Black/Dark/Shadow) or bright (Light/Highlight/Specular)
  3. Press and hold a zone's Highlight button to confirm its territory in the viewer (gray = not affected)Previewing a zone with the Highlight button
  4. Drag the zone's wheel center to tint it, Exposure for brightness, Saturation for vividness — only this brightness range moves
  5. Press Shift-D to compare; every zone has its own Reset in the upper right

Practice练习

  1. Take a washed-out-sky HDR clip: add blue with the Highlight zone, nudge Saturation up slightly, then add a touch of warmth to the brightest area with Specular — compare with Shift-D.
  2. Hold each zone's Highlight button in turn and say out loud which part of the frame each of the six zones owns in this shot.

Can I use the HDR Wheels on SDR footage?

Yes. The six zones are simply a finer brightness division and work on any footage; high-dynamic-range material just shows off their value most, with its layered highlights.

Primary wheels, Log wheels or HDR wheels — which when?

Coarse to fine: primary wheels for the overall balance (see Primary Color Wheels), Log wheels for narrow-zone refinement (see Log Color Wheels), HDR wheels to subdivide highlights and shadows further for the finest zone work.

Is the Global wheel the same as Offset?

Similar job: shifting the whole frame with no zones. Global stays docked at the panel's left by default; if you want its slot for another zone, change it in the panel options.

How do I recover when I've made a mess?

Every zone has its own Reset in the upper right. Grading is non-destructive — compare with Shift-D and start over whenever you like.
