LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Learning Objectives

After this card you can match each stills, audio and delivery format to its job, and you choose formats by asking "for whom, on what screen".

Concepts

Stills · lossless PNG · TIFF — graphics, screenshots, print & archive; TIFF stores high bit depth.

Stills · lossy JPG · WebP · AVIF — WebP / AVIF save more; JPG is the most compatible but decays.

Stills · working PSD · EXR (multi-channel) — layered / multi-channel intermediates; production chain only.

Audio · lossless WAV · AIFF · FLAC — mostly PCM; FLAC is lossless compression.

Audio · delivery AAC · MP3 — ships alongside H.264 / H.265; small, good enough.

Delivery · cinema DCP (MXF + JPEG2000) — the cinema packaging & codec standard, not an ordinary MP4.

Steps

  1. First ask: for whom, on what screen
  2. Online video delivery: H.264 first — 4K / HDR moves to H.265
  3. Screenshots and graphics: PNG (lossless); photos: JPG
  4. Audio delivery: AAC / MP3; archive: WAV / FLAC
  5. A film headed to a cinema is DCP, not an ordinary MP4

Practice练习

Hands-on task

Export the same image as PNG and as JPG, compare size and quality; say which should be PNG and which JPG.

Self-check

Work through the task, then tick every line; all checked means you own this card.

JPG or PNG?

Graphics, screenshots, transparency: PNG (lossless). Photos and maximum compatibility: JPG.

Do cinemas play MP4?

No. Cinemas use DCP (MXF + JPEG2000) — a different packaging and codec standard from an ordinary MP4.

FLAC vs MP3?

FLAC is lossless compression — smaller but loses nothing, good for archive; MP3 is the lossy delivery format, small and good enough.
