LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Learning Objectives

After this card you can name the core rules of continuity editing and use them to cut a multi-angle scene so it flows without jarring the viewer.

Concepts

Continuity editing makes a string of shots feel like one unbroken flow of time and space — the goal is not flash, but making the audience forget the cuts exist.

  • Match on Action: cut while motion is underway — the door-opening hand reaches halfway and you switch to the other angle, so the movement "hides" the cut.
  • Eyeline Match: a character looks off-screen, and the next shot shows what they see; the audience builds the space in their head.
  • Don't cross the line (180-Degree Rule): keep cameras on one side of the Axis of Action so screen direction stays consistent; crossing it loses the viewer instantly.
  • Shot-Reverse-Shot: the backbone of dialogue scenes — over A's shoulder to B, over B's shoulder to A, alternating with the conversation.
  • Progress the shot sizes: wide, medium, close move with the emotion; cutting between identical framings reads as a Jump Cut — a mistake, not a choice.

Steps

  1. Review the footage: find every angle of the scene and sort your options by shot size and perspective
  2. Lay down the Master Shot first to establish the scene's space and timeA timeline built on the master shot
  3. Move into shot-reverse-shot: cut to whoever speaks, to the listener for reactions, landing cuts on natural pauses in the dialogue
  4. For action beats, cut mid-movement — switch angles the instant someone stands, turns, or opens a door
  5. Place every shot precisely with three-point editing (see Three-Point Editing), then play the scene through to check for line-crossing and jump cuts

Practice练习

  1. Cut 30 seconds of a two-person dialogue as shot-reverse-shot and play it three times: first pass for the axis, second for action joins, third just for emotional flow.
  2. Deliberately swap one shot for a line-crossing angle, show it to a classmate, and ask "what feels off?" — then fix it.

What is crossing the line, and how do I fix it?

Dialogue and action have an imaginary axis; keeping every camera on the same side preserves left-right consistency. If a shot crosses it, cushion the jump with a neutral shot or a reaction shot.

Which exact frame should I cut on?

First choice: mid-action (Match on Action); second: a natural pause in the dialogue. Avoid hard-joining two static frames — give the cut a "moving" reason and it will flow.

Is a jump cut always wrong?

In continuity editing, hard-joining identical framings looks like a mistake; in vlogs and interview compression it's an accepted style. Learn to avoid it before you earn the right to use it.
