  3. Temporal NRFrames3LumaChroma Threshold

After this card you can tell Temporal NR and Spatial NR apart and what each is good at, reduce noise in the Motion Effects panel, and stop before "clean" turns into "smeared".

Concepts

Noise Reduction removes the random grain dancing across your footage — low-light, high-ISO, small-sensor shots suffer most. Resolve's Color page fights noise two complementary ways: one looks across frames, the other within a single frame.

  • Grading amplifies noise: lifting shadows, adding contrast or saturation all make grain more visible — which is why NR comes before grading (see Noise Reduction First).
  • Temporal NR (TNR): analyzes several neighboring frames to separate "grain that jumps every frame" from real moving detail — the workhorse for motion areas, and the heaviest on the GPU.
  • Spatial NR (SNR): hunts for noise inside the current frame only and smooths it out — great for static areas, but push too far and real detail gets smeared too.
  • Luma and Chroma are separate: gray grain (luma noise) and color blotches (chroma noise) each have their own Threshold — blotches are usually easier to kill.
  • Small values on both beat maxing out one: TNR handles motion, SNR handles static areas; modest amounts of each look far more natural than cranking a single one.
Before noise reduction
After noise reduction

Steps

  1. On the Color page, select the noisy shot and rename the first node in the pipeline to NR (why it goes first: see Noise Reduction First)
  2. Open the Motion Effects palette on the right to find the Temporal NR and Spatial NR sectionsThe Motion Effects palette
  3. In Temporal NR: set Frames to 3, and start Luma and Chroma Threshold around 10
  4. In Spatial NR: set Radius to Medium, and again grow the Thresholds from small valuesTNR and SNR settings
  5. Zoom into the shadows with the scroll wheel and press Command-D/Ctrl-D to toggle the node, comparing before and after
  6. Still noisy? Raise the Threshold in small steps; the moment skin and hair start to smear, back off

Practice练习

  1. Take a low-light clip, enable only Spatial NR, and raise the Chroma Threshold from 0 to 50 step by step — note the point where blotches vanish and the point where detail starts to smear.
  2. On the same clip, switch to TNR (Frames = 3) plus a small SNR, compare with "SNR only", and describe the difference in moving areas.

Why did my noise get MORE visible after grading?

Lifting shadows, adding contrast and saturation all amplify noise — the grain didn't grow, you made it more visible. Denoise before grading; see Noise Reduction First.

TNR or SNR — which one should I use?

Both, in small amounts: TNR excels in moving areas, SNR in static ones. If your machine struggles, start with SNR only — TNR analyzes multiple frames and hits the GPU harder.

Playback stutters as soon as I enable NR — normal?

Normal. Both NR types are heavy computation. Toggle the NR node off with Command-D while you grade, and turn it back on before export.

There's no noise reduction in my Motion Effects panel?

Temporal and spatial noise reduction are DaVinci Resolve Studio (paid) features — the free version doesn't show these sections. On the free version, control noise while shooting.
