Node Workflow
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Add Node>Add Serial(或Option-S/Alt-S)追加节点 02
Contrast

After this card you can break a complete grade into a serial node chain — balance → contrast → tint → sharpen — where every step toggles independently and any step is easy to find for rework.
Concepts
A node workflow splits one grade into a chain of Serial Nodes, each with a single job: node 01 makes the picture "normal" first, and every later node advances exactly one new idea — no interference, no fear of rework.
- Balance lives in node 01: black/white points and casts are settled there — every node downstream stands on a "normal picture".
- One new idea per node: contrast, tint and sharpening each get their own node; any move you want to solo has earned its own node.
- Serial is the default:
Add Node>Add Serial(shortcutOption-S/Alt-S) appends at the end of the chain; Parallel Nodes earn their keep in Lesson 5. - Fix first, then beautify: technical problems (balance, contrast, tint) before texture (sharpening, looks) — a mistake upstream wastes everything downstream.
- Sharpen last and sharpen gently: sharpening amplifies noise along with detail, so it goes at the end of the chain, in small amounts, toggled often.
Steps
- Select the shot and do the base balance on node 01: set black/white points and remove casts (see Primary Color Wheels)
- Right-click node 01 and choose
Add Node>Add Serial(orOption-S/Alt-S) to append node 02
- On node 02, drag
Contrastright to add punch; if the picture gets too bright, dragPivotto bring it back — it won't breach the points you already set - Add node 03 and drag
Tempto set the warmth — touch tint only, don't go back upstream - Add node 04, open the
Blurpalette in the middle panel and nudgeRadiusslightly downward to sharpen
- Click each node's number (or
Command-D/Ctrl-D) to toggle it, confirming every node owns exactly one change - Want a parameter back to zero? Double-click its label to reset that value alone
Practice练习
- Build a four-node chain on one shot — balance, contrast, tint, sharpen; then disable only the contrast node and say out loud what the picture lost.
- Deliberately leave an obvious cast in node 01 and watch the next three nodes "build on the mistake" — feel why balance must come first.
When do I add a new node versus keep adjusting the current one?
Ask one question: will I ever want to toggle or rework this move on its own? If yes, it gets a new node; refinements of the same goal (like Contrast with Pivot) can share one.
What's the difference between serial and parallel nodes?
Serial nodes queue up, each eating the previous node's output; parallel nodes split from one source and merge back. Master serial first — parallel finds its use in Lesson 5.
How is the Contrast parameter different from pushing contrast with the wheels?
The wheels' Master Wheels move your black and white points; Contrast with Pivot adds punch within the points you already set. Once the points are locked, Contrast is the steadier tool.
Why must sharpening come last?
Sharpening amplifies noise together with detail; placed early, every later adjustment has to work around that noise. Keep it last, keep it small, and compare by toggling.
