LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Resolve

Learning Objectives

After this card you can explain in your own words what all-in-one post production means, which pipeline stage each of Resolve's seven pages covers, and what it means for your learning and future work.

Concepts

All-in-one post production puts editing, color grading, VFX, motion graphics and audio post into a single application and a single project — there are no handoffs, because you never leave.

  • The traditional way is handoffs: editing, grading, VFX and mixing live in separate applications, passed around as exports, XML and EDL files — every handoff a chance to lose media or mix up versions.
  • Seven pages, seven crafts: Media manages footage, Cut is fast rough cutting, Edit is refined editing, Fusion does VFX, Color grades, Fairlight handles audio, and Deliver exports.
  • One shared set of project data: a grade you apply on the Color page is already live when you return to the Edit timeline — no exporting or importing in between.
  • A grading pedigree: Resolve began as a dedicated color grading system and grew into a full-pipeline tool; grading is still its signature strength.
  • Why it matters to you: one application exposes the whole pipeline; a solo creator or small team can finish a piece with a single tool; teams stop passing projects around (see Blackmagic Cloud Collaboration).

Steps

  1. Open any project and click Media in the bottom navigation to confirm your footage is in the Media Pool
  2. Go to Edit and drag two or three clips onto the timeline in order
  3. Go to Color and push any color wheel around to feel the image changeColor
  4. Go to Fairlight, play the timeline and watch the audio meters dance
  5. Go to Deliver and browse the export settings panel (don't render yet)
  6. Return to Edit — the Color page change is already live. That's "one set of project data" in action

Practice练习

  1. Draw a flow chart from "footage just shot" to "published online", marking which Resolve pages it passes through, with one sentence per page describing its job.
  2. Mini research: ask someone who works in video (or look it up) how editing and color are handed off in a traditional pipeline, then write two sentences on what the all-in-one flow eliminates.

Is Resolve really free?

The free version is enough to complete the entire course and its exercises. The paid Studio version is a one-time purchase unlocking noise reduction, more AI features and higher-resolution output — nothing a beginner needs.

If one app does everything, is it mediocre at each?

Quite the opposite: the Color page descends from a grading system used in Hollywood for decades, Fairlight is a full digital audio workstation, and Fusion is a node-based compositor — each stands up as a professional tool.

I already know another editing app — is this still worth learning?

Editing thinking transfers; the migration cost is mostly shortcuts and interface habits. Resolve is free, has a very high ceiling in color, and delivers start to finish — worth it as a second tool or a full switch.

Can eight weeks really cover all seven pages?

Cover, yes; master, no. The course goal is knowing what each page does and getting hands-on with the basics. Real fluency comes from practicing on your own projects afterwards.
