Waveform Thumbnail
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Media Pool,

After this card you can read waveform thumbnails in the Media Pool and judge a clip's level and condition without playing a single frame.
Concepts
A waveform thumbnail draws an audio clip's volume as a waveform right in the Media Pool — the height and color of that shape is the clip's health report.
- Evaluate without playback: one glance at the waveform's height tells you roughly how loud a clip is — no need to audition everything.
- Color means level: green is safe, yellow is the sweet spot for dialogue, red is nearing overload — same color logic as the meters.
- Shape means content: speech swells the waveform and pauses flatten it, so you can roughly locate passages by shape alone.
Steps
- Open the
Media Pooland switch to thumbnail view - Find an audio clip and study the waveform on its thumbnail

- Read the waveform's overall height to estimate loudness
- Read its color: green and yellow are fine, red means watch the level

Practice练习
- Pick three audio clips and, without reading names or listening, guess which is loudest from the waveforms — then verify by ear.
- Find a reddish-waveform clip, edit it into the timeline, and pull it back to a safe level with the gain line.
Why don't I see any waveforms in my Media Pool?
Make sure you're in thumbnail view, not list view — and remember waveforms belong to audio clips; video thumbnails show picture frames.
Should I trust the waveform or the meter reading?
Both — they have different jobs. Waveforms are for scanning media and locating passages; for exact levels, trust the Mixer meters.
Can I spot a too-quiet clip from its waveform?
Yes — a waveform that's thin and flat top to bottom means low levels. Run Normalizing Audio Levels to reach the target level first, then fine-tune.
