Checkerboarding
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After this card you can checkerboard neighboring audio clips across two tracks, leaving room for crossfades and detailed trimming.
Concepts
Checkerboarding alternates neighboring audio clips across two tracks — clips no longer butt against each other, so transitions and trimming get room to breathe.
- The problem it solves: on one track, a crossfade between butt-joined clips makes each side "borrow" handle from the other; on separate tracks the two clips overlap freely, as long as you like.
- The layout: clips 1, 3, 5 stay on
A1; clips 2, 4, 6 move toA2— from above it looks like a checkerboard. - When to use it: whenever dialogue, interviews, or music passages need smooth transitions.
- It's only a layout: nothing about the clips changes; it purely makes transitions and fine trimming easier.
Steps
- Line up the clips you want to transition on
A1 - Create a second audio track
A2in the track area - Hold
Shiftand drag clips 2, 4… straight down toA2without moving them in time
- Let neighbors overlap at the joints, then add crossfades or drag the fade handles

Practice练习
- Checkerboard three butt-joined clips and add a crossfade at each joint — compare how it feels against doing it on a single track.
- After splitting, extend one of the clips a little and feel the trimming freedom two tracks give you.
Single tracks can take crossfades too — why checkerboard?
A same-track crossfade is limited by the handles on both sides — whatever overlaps must be given up. On separate tracks, clips overlap freely, so fade length and trimming are far more flexible.
Does checkerboarding affect the export?
No. It's just a track layout and changes nothing in the clips; what you hear depends on your levels and fades.
Is this the same as checkerboard editing by character?
No — that's Checkerboard Editing, an audio-post split by character for processing. This card is an editing-stage layout that serves transitions.
